Legalized Prostitution and Society, By Nic Schweitzer

———————————————————————

In the early 1960s, the United Nations passed the “Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs”, considered by many today as a milestone in the international War on Drugs:

“The principal objectives of the Convention are to limit the possession, use, trade in, distribution, import, export, manufacture and production of drugs exclusively to medical and scientific purposes and to address drug trafficking through international cooperation to deter and discourage drug traffickers. (INCB 1)

After that, President Nixon signed the CSA, or Controlled Substances Act, into law. This made marijuana 100% illegal, and, according to SafeAccessNow “The federal government regulates drugs through the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) (21 U.S.C. § 811), which does not recognize the difference between medical and recreational use of marijuana. “ (SafeAccessNow 1). Marijuana has never killed anybody. (WebMD 1) There are effects; sure, every drug has side effects. But these are all reversible, because Marijuana isn’t as addictive as cigarettes have been shown to be. In fact, CNN reported in 1998 that Cigarettes have ammonia purposely added to them to make the vapor more like a nicotine sponge, getting more people addicted. (CNN 1)

Smoking cigarettes however is, according to the CDC, “…adverse health effects from cigarette smoking account for an estimated 443,000 deaths, or nearly one of every five deaths, each year in the United States.” (CDC 1). “…More deaths … by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined” (CDC 1).

Why is it that the thing that doesn’t kill people is the thing you have to buy off a guy on the corner, versus something that kills 443,000 a year you can buy in a store? Why do we always buy the thing that kills us and deny the thing that could save us all?

Solar energy is another example. Solar energy has already been used for millions of years to grow crops, and, ironically, helped create many of the fossil fuels depleting the ozone layer, destroying the ocean, and, beyond that, has fueled more wars for control of entire countries than solar energy has had a chance of powering homes. A single house in any given day uses 600 watts an hour. (TLC 1). I know it’s expensive, but with the right setup not only will you not have to pay for electricity anymore, but in some cases the power company pays you because you take in so much power! Why wouldn’t someone want free money?
Beyond that, a study out of Florida said if we built a 100 mile by 100 mile solar farm in the Southwest, roughly the size of land that has been strip mined for coal, we could create 7,000 gigawatts of energy, or 7,000,000,000,000 watts of energy (Environments Florida 1). And it would take a lot of people to try and make sure this literal powerhouse goes smoothly.

But we won’t. It’s “too complex” to understand.

This paper isn’t about solar energy or legalizing it. It’s about prostitution. Now what could possibly be good about legalizing prostitution? It would promote disease, force women and children to sell their bodies, it’ll increase domestic violence, there will be more dead hookers, and, worst case scenario, destroy all the families in the world! It’ll kill the great institution of marriage, and, beyond that, kill America. And, beyond that, it’ll always exist, even if legalized, so why bother? It started in the alleyways, it should stay in the alleyways.

First off… no. Legalizing prostitution would not promote disease. Quite the opposite, actually. Glenn Betteridge, the Senior Policy Analyst for the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, once said:

These laws [criminalizing acts associated with prostitution], and the way in which they’re enforced, push sex workers into situations that put their health and safety at risk, and leave them open to stigma and discrimination, violence, and possible exposure to HIV. (ProCon 1)

Beyond that, the Co-founder of the National Task Force on Prostitution, Priscilla Alexander, wrote:

For HIV/AIDS prevention to succeed, the conditions of risk have to change. The context – legal, social, economic – of sex work has to change, with repeal of criminal laws, access to visas and work permits, freedom of movement and association, and occupational safety and health regulations, to reduce the imposition of risk from above. Until then, it will be heroic, strong individuals that can insist on safe behaviors, leaving those who are less heroic, those who are more timid and afraid, to suffer the consequences of the context of risk. (ProCon 1)

And we can trust most individuals! But, then again, some people will commit rape, right? Well, there’s the only argument against legalized prostitution: You can’t stop rape. You couldn’t if you tried. There is no way rape statistics will ever drop, ever. I’m dead serious. And the thought of that rape crime spreading terrifies people to an insane degree so horrifyingly stupid, it should shock anyone who reads this example: A story by the BBC back in 2000 showed an incident of a pediatrician having her office vandalized because of confusion with the word pedophile (Which is pronounced Pee-doh-file in the UK). (bbc.co.uk 1). Child rape, and rape in general, is an extremely scary thought no one should have to deal with. But doesn’t it kind of make sense that if hookers are available and legal, most rapists and pedophiles would just try them first? Its not a great thought for the prostitutes, but hey. Its their problem now.

But then we look at Nevada, and see how their legal brothels operate. At the moment, there are 30 operating brothels. (Las Vegas Logue 1). According to the Nevada Legislatures own website,

“Once each month, a sample of blood, identified by the name of the prostitute as it appears on her local work permit card, for a test to confirm the presence or absence of: (1) Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); and (2) Syphilis. (b) Once each week, a cervical specimen, identified by the name of the prostitute as it appears on her local work permit card, for a test to confirm the presence or absence of gonorrhea and Chlamydia trachomatis by culture or antigen detection or DNA probe.” (Leg.State.NV.us 41).

Beyond that, if a hooker DOES get HIV, “…the prostitute has tested positive in a test approved by regulation of the State Board of Health for exposure to the human immunodeficiency virus, is liable for any damages caused to a person exposed to the virus as a result of the employment”. (Leg.State.NV.us 41). So, if the hookers are tested once a month for ALL STDs, and one of the ladies is tested HIV-positive, the brothel in question gets fined! There is a VERY BIG incentive to make sure your employees are being safe, because A: You don’t want to be known as the place where people sometimes get HIV, and B: You don’t want to lose money because of the worker!

Now, a very popular yet very wrong assessment is “Prostitution will save the economy. People will flock to these brothels day one!” Which, first off, is a very offensive statement (We’ll get to that later), but also is very untrue. The US debt is roughly $14.5 Trillion dollars (US Debt Clock 1). Illegal Prostitution right now, in the US alone, comes to about $40 Million a day. Multiplied by 365 days in a year, and you have $14.6 Billion in black market profits. (Havocscope 1). Now, considering that $1 Trillion dollars is $1 Billion times 1000, the chances of prostitution saving the economy are about the same as a cubicle worker being electrocuted by a sheet of glass. Not only does it not make sense, it doesn’t work, ever. For prostitution alone to save the economy, at its current rate, it would take a good 100+ years of sleeping with everyone in the US twice, adjusting for inflation. But that doesn’t mean it’s worthless.

The illegal profits for gas and oil smuggling is $10 Billion, just $4.6B less than prostitution. Alcohol smuggling, $34 million. Cigarette smuggling? $5 Billion. Counterfeit batteries trade for $12 million a year, while software piracy runs at $9.5 Billion a year. (Havocscope 1). Prostitution is different. Prostitution involves live human beings for it to work. No one is paying $100 minimum for 30 minutes with a blow up doll! They want a real person! And most of these people (a majority of women, just in case you didn’t know) are actually volunteers. In India, 70% (!) of prostitutes opted for their job. (Hindustan Times 1). And, as a major blow to the Christian Rights other major argument that “Only poor women join prostitution”, it turns out that all the poor women (About 65% of the 3,000 women interviewed, out of 5,000 workers overall) joined because they wanted to. Its either have sex for money or make dolls and shoes all day. For some, making shoes is appealing, for others, sex works. Sometimes both.

But then there’s the Christian Rights greatest argument is that prostitution will destroy families, and, beyond that, destroy America, a phrase used often by Pat Robertson of “The 700 Club”, or that show you’ve either never heard of or ignore because you have a brain. I’ve decided not to use quotes, because most of them trace back to Pats hatred of homosexuals, transgender people, feminists, the ACLU, etc. Instead, I’d like to use his own method of hate, the bible, to prove him wrong. He uses Leviticus 18:22:

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (Bible Gateway 1).

I shall use the never-quoted-yet-still-in-the-same-book Hosea 4:14:

I will not punish your daughters when they turn to prostitution, nor your daughters-in law when they commit adultery, because the men themselves consort with harlots and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes–a people without understanding will come to ruin! (Bible 4-14).

It means that the men who use these women are no better off than those idiots who worship false idols (A biggie in the Christian communities of things not to do). You cannot claim that prostitution will destroy families when, in the same book used to discriminate against “Fags”, it says “Go ahead, we don’t care. But understand that YOU will be destroyed”. Now why mention that? Sex addiction, something not mentioned much in this debate. One could sell everything he or she owns for sex, but not end up killing. Sure, hookers being killed is nothing new, its become a clichéd plotline in every detective storyline, ever. At some point, every cop covers a dead hooker case. That has nothing to do with family, though. That has to do with unstable men. It’s just a fact.

So how do we legalize it? Facts don’t work anymore, stories do. And all one would need is a great story that moves everyone so much that it inspires a law. Megan’s Law passed because a 7 year old girl was kidnapped, raped and murdered by a previously-convicted sex offender. So, for a prostitution story-based law, what about a worst case scenario? Again, it worked for Megan Kanka’s family, so why can’t it work for prostitutes? How about when two German gentlemen kidnapped & tortured 2 hookers, killing one, all on camera. Or John Jamelske, who kidnapped and raped 6 women in a secret bunker he had built underground. He was the inspiration for the “Cave” in the basement of Buffalo Bill’s house in “The Silence of the Lambs”, by the way. (Mark Gado 1). How about “Fusako Sano”, a 10 year old (only three years older than Megan of Megan’s law) who was kidnapped and enslaved for 9 years as both a sex slave and a general slave. (Independent 1). Maybe Elisabeth Fritzl, who shocked the world when news broke that her father had kept her in the basement of his home for 24 years, bearing 7 kids. (Independent 1). Too many examples?

The solution to end a majority of these crimes is simple: Help these guys get laid, cause they clearly can’t on their own. And it all starts with basic thinking: You could save a child’s life, keep someone out of jail, piss off some annoying Christians, save the lives of women in poverty and help stop the spread of AIDS, just by demanding legalization. If that isn’t enough, this service does extend to everyone, wink wink.

—————————————————–

THIS IS A RANT!!! MAY NOT MAKE SENSE!!! FAIR WARNING!!!

Yahoo! has this incredible article (Linked below) on all the shows canceled this season. 43 shows, at minimum, 86 at max across the board. The last time I saw finales and cancellations at this rate, seriously, That 70s Show was at a ratings hike of 90 share, then the next day, we find out that number is utter bulls**t. And that, kids, is why That 70s show is not around anymore: Because Fox lies about everything.

http://tv.yahoo.com/slideshow/715/photos/1

But this brings up a topic I wanted to talk about for a long time. I have watched TV my entire life. I started with reruns of Home Improvement, Scrubs and Friends on Fox12. My brother and I would watch these shows while my mom worked. and she’d be at her desk behind us, while we watched TV in front of us. We were quiet, so she didn’t complain.

Now, I’m attempting to become a communications major. In other words, I am a f*****g expert on all things TV, be it shows currently on or how they’re made individually. I have taught myself the film types, RED RAW code formats,1080i vs. 1080p, XLR cables, microphones, build light kits out of old florescent tubes and used cardboard as barn doors, created a liquid rubber mold of a beer bottle, made sugar glass, and hit myself in the nose with it. I am an expert on all things TV, production, pre-or-post, writing-to-editing. It is with this expertise that I can tell you why everything has failed.

Execs at TV stations and networks today are working purely off numbers. That simple. I hate sounding like a hippie, but it is truly all about money. You seen the ads for “Chaos” on CBS. Oh, wait, you didn’t? Exactly. They have become the guy who wants to get rich quick without realizing he could pawn his useless bookshelf in the garage on Antiques Roadshow and end up a millionaire, but instead he wont, because
A) The pitch is so good. A blanket with sleeves? $35 dollars to invest? I’m rich!!!
B) The shelf is too damn heavy, its just too much work.

Now, going through these shows one by one, you can tell why they got canceled, because 60% were s**t to begin with. The Cape? The Defenders? S**t my Dad Says?! Live to Dance, Mad Love, Better with You, My Generation, No Ordinary Family, Skating with the Stars, Americas Next Great Restaurant, Chase, The Event, Outlaw, Outsourced, The Paul Reiser Show, Christ, man, its not only sad that I have basically a whole list, and not just 3 titles as good comedy rules say to have, but on top of it, these are in order of Network. CBS, ABC, NBC. Generally considered to be the big dogs.

What the hell happened? I know, I just said, look, forget that for a second. What the hell happened to the networks?!! NBC had 30Rock just 5 years ago, today its considered a modern classic. FOX has had Americas Most Wanted for close to 24 years, its now been axed despite decent ratings. CBS has, like it or not, The Big Bang Theory, which has become the #1 show in Canada (If not for a month or two…). Thats the other thing.

These shows, the ones you’ve heard of, the ones we consider “Modern Classics”, or, well, “Good”… these started 4, 5, even 6 years ago. Whats the good comedy today? Modern Family? Is that it, really? The Good Wife for drama?

You have to pay Showtime or HBO for quality, because an advertiser isn’t pulling strings, but at the same time, they haven’t necessarily had a flop since HBO’s “Lucky Louie”. I don’t recall Showtime even having one at all!

So, yes, Advertising has a lot of pull, but thats only 50%. The other 50% is something I call “The Oscar Effect”: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or AMPAS, is the organization that runs the Oscars, or Academy Awards, or whatever you call em. This year, they decided to debut Anne Hathaway and James Franco as the hosts. They bombed. It was the worst show in years. Most years, yeah, people say they’re terrible every year, but I think that when people like Jon Stewart, Ellen Degeneres, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin are hosting, people who really know how to hold a crowd, then you have funny, memorable moments and jokes people tell for a couple of weeks then move on. Last year was when Martin and Baldwin talked about Meryl Strep:

Anyone who looks at that woman says the exact same thing: “Can that woman act, and whats with all the Hitler memorabilia”.

Thats an awesome joke. This year… I can’t even remember anything. I only remember the whole autotune thing, which I changed the channel for, because I thought it was embarrassingly bad.

The Oscar Effect is this: Its using young, inexperienced people to target Young, inexperienced people. It kinda makes sense… then you try to figure out why. Think about it: Why use inexperienced people to target inexperienced people? Relatability, the cornerstone of Hollywood. By the way, they just found out theres 500+ liposuction clinics in Southern California alone, so… yeah.

But in reality, the kids who are watching the Oscars are the ones who have been watching it for years. The ones like me, who like movies. Or just the actors on stage. Or maybe just the jokes, f*k, I don’t know. But the main fact is that no one can just target the youth and hope for sucess because Franco is hot to girls, and all boys wanna f**k Anne Hathaway. It works on that level, and nothing else.

If anything, we should rename “The Oscar Effect” to “The PayPal Porn Site Effect”, because thats what this is. A horrible advertising gimmick known as Bandwagon, where everyone you love (the actors) are all jumping on board, so why not you. With kids today, everyone is looking up porn and talking about how that one chick squirted like a fountain, so you look it up, only to find out that part of the site requires a credit card. Well, here we are. Were horny, but no credit card. We are expecting some f****n’, but no dice. Instead, you get amateur stuff that looks like open heart surgery. Which brings me back to the original point.

Don’t farm out Network TV, PRIMETIME, to newbies, so you can attract the young people forever. You realize that half the canceled shows mentioned above did worse or just EQUAL TO episodes of Seinfeld? Thats right, a 10 year old show did better than a show shot on RED with AVID MEDIA COMPOSER to edit on. They had 35mm and a flatbed truck, some scissors and scotch tape, and their show is considered one of the greatest in history. The Cape had high end, 4K quality equipment and was shot with so much green screen Zack Snyder puked, but it doesn’t matter, because ads don’t trump talent. And targeting the youth is something Cigarette companies do. You know who else targets the youth with Cigarette Ads? The Truth Project, Project Filter, the Idaho Meth Project even.

They’ve lost. Maybe its time for TV to take a cue from Big Tobacco and stop aiming for the youth, and start aiming for quality TV shows. I know Ken Levine is good. He worked on M*A*S*H, Frasier, and, most importantly, Becker, one of my favorites.

By the way, Harrys Law, a show I loved dearly, was saved, because the creator is David E. Kelly, who has won 10 Primetime Emmy’s’. he knows what he’s doing, and he was saved. Its great to try and get new people in the industry, but, lets face it, YouTube stars cannot be successful on TV. For a year, they tried getting Chad Vader on TV. Didn’t work. Maybe thats what these shows should do. Go online. It worked for CTRL.

Going now, its late. Bye!

Turns out there IS a definition for beast.“Dictionary.reference.com:”
–noun
1. any nonhuman animal, esp. a large, four-footed mammal.
2. the crude animal nature common to humans and the lower animals: Hunger brought out the beast in him.
3. a cruel, coarse, filthy, or otherwise beastlike person.
4. a live creature, as distinguished from a plant: What manner of beast is this?
5. the beast, the antichrist. Rev. 13:18.

What gets me is #3: Cruel, Coarse or Filthy. Look, I know the idiots who say “Beast” smell bad, but they usually aren’t Cruel, and generally its only their language thats coarse. So… what gives?

I believe it has to do with #1, or the lack of #1: The dissaperance of Bigfoot from the national media. Young men everywhere miss him. And now they are afraid if they ask “Where’s Bigfoot”, people will hoist them up and burn them at the stake as a witch. But… that still doesn’t explain jack s**t.

F**k it. I’m going to Quiznos to talk about bigfoot with Odd Eye Jimmy. He has AMAZING collections of sea salts that he hangs in bags off of his toes. Its amazing.

So, theres APPARENTLY a Mosque debate. Heh. Lets go over the facts that will support my point:
-The site is in an Abandoned Burlington Coat Factory.
-This is 4 blocks from the WTC, out of view because of the TALL buildings surrounding it.
-St. Pauls Cathedral. You can look that up.
-WTC was right NEXT to St. Pauls Cathedral in 2001. It still is. There, you happy?

So, in March of 2010, My mother, my brother and I all got on a plane from Boise to Chicago O’Hare to La Guardia and spent a week in NYC. It was my first time EVER being on a plane, so, theres that.

We stayed at a hotel in 21st Queensboro, a Best Western DOWN THE BLOCK FROM SILVERCUP STUDIOS!!! (They wouldn’t let me in… sad faces…)

Throughout the week, we went ALL OVER New York City. You know that Ferris Wheel in the Toys R Us in Times Square? Rode it. Twice.

Well, on Wednesday, we went down to… well, downtown NYC. But we got off on the wrong stop, because were stupid tourists. So, we walked towards where we wanted to go, this was the former remnants of the World Trade Centers, we all know why its not there anymore.

Well, along the way, we passed this REALLY FOUL ODOR. It was an old Burlington Coat Factory, it seemed Abandoned. I don’t remember much but the smell, since we ran past it. Looked Decayed. Probably some old people living in it.

Well, 9 blocks later, we got to St. Pauls Cathedral. We went inside. It was full of flowers, and a giant banner from (I THINK it was from Iowa, but I’m NOT sure…). Anyways, I went out back, and there was this cemetery FILLED with these… black tombstones. And I looked up. Stunned….

9/11 happened on What Famous date, anybody? Anybody name it? Thats Right, September 11th, 2001! Good for you, Bristol Palin! And does anyone know how much time has passed since September 11th, 2001 and August 23, 2010? About 3271 or so odd days, and they have been odd, believe me.

Between 3271 days, in America, supposedly the GREATEST country in the world… we had a tiny, skinny structure about 5 stories high made of tiny H-beams. And to the right is a bunch of stores, one of them has a blue banner out front that says “9/11 Memorial Preview site”. And the Building is TALLER THAN THE NEW WTC!!! THE “NEW” WTC ISN’T EVEN TALLER THAN A FREAKING DELI?!!!

This is my proof I was there: The St. Paul’s Chapel Business Card. They also sell DVD’s.

So, I know more than 65% of Americans. It makes NO SENSE to illegally block someone who is doing something legal. They own the property, they have the OK from the NYC board of… eh, screw it. I don’t know, and frankly I don’t care. I have lost ALL faith in America. Not Americans, AMERICA. Americans are a wonderful people, well, at least the 35% who know what their talking about. The rest are held hostage.

And if I am EVER asked to explain these sentiments on national TV, I’m gonna piss all over Sarah Palin for trying to hold amazing American people like the Muslims who want a basketball court near the WTC… you know what? Screw Palin. She wins the presidency, I’m moving to Canada, I’m gonna get free health care and be rich selling toasters. Suck it.

There we go. Commence hate below:

…that I HAVE to do the Zombie flick first, THEN the Werewolf-Dracula one.

The movie is called “Dracula’s House of Frankenstein”, all I have to do is find an abandoned house (In a recession and my moms a property manager? Done deal), a hot chick who will pose as Bianca, an Egyptian costume, and a tie in with the Zombie flick.

Tie in? The First movie is called Shock Monster, basically a Zombie that falls in love. I’d immediately think Toxic Avenger, but maybe we can ward it off or call it out as a respectful nod, but anyways, he loses the woman he loves, then kills a lot of people, scientists try to kill HIM, but eventually he escapes, leading into…

Dracula’s House of Frankenstein, where he stumbles weakened into an seemingly abandoned mansion, which holds Bianca in her outfit, being held captive by either Blacula or Dracula, who can only be killed by a werewolf as we know from Van Helsings texts, but the Zombie can’t speak, so using gutteral sounds he must convince the werewolf to kill dracula and free Bianca for no apparent reason.

Cut to a shot of her orgasaming, boom. We have 2 80s trailers.

One year of broken promises later, here it is, the new Nicsho project:

And later…

Sorry for the large size, but its all I could get. I plan on making the Draclua one first, originally the other way around, but looking at the poster… its just not possible! At least on our budget, for now. But we CAN do the Dracula one on a shoestring and make it look like genuine 8mm through some techniques called the Shoot-in-24p-Technique and Use-Magic-Bullets-Then-Export-In-h.264-Technique. Complex stuff.

Anydoozle, this should be easy, mummies can be done with toliet paper, paper mache masks and we have a sword prop. The werewolf is easy, we can make it in Maya 7 OR try to go cheeky and establish the fur off a human mold made of latex. Generally, the stuff I’m thinking of has a pot life of 10 minutes, and we could only cover 1 arm at a time for about $7 a bottle. THEN we have to add out imaginary fur… what will it be?

Grass Clippings we Spray paint? Eh… maybe? Detail it with a fine brush later on? I’m not sure… gonna have to sleep on that. Eyes can be DI’d digitally, or we can make (PAINFUL!) caps, maybe NiteGlo’s, who knows. Could cost near $100, and i just blew it all on Red Vs Blue remastered and Recollection Collection… that was stupid of me…

So, based on the fact this is more of an 80s B-Movie, grindhouse horror, we NEED it to be physical. That’ll be expensive. I’ll look up some of their techniques tomorrow. Its Midnight in boise, and i deserve sleep.

Listening to: DJ SHADOW- Midnight in a Perfect World.

Goodnight.
